Cue the heart emojis—it’s February! Not only is it a month for passion and romance, but February is also American Heart Month, which means that it’s extra important to show your heart some love.

Here are five ways to support a healthy heart:

1. Put on your running shoes

There’s a reason why they call it cardio. Your cardiovascular system performs best when you work it, so lace up those sneakers.

2. Just say no to unhealthy fats

Trans fats clog arteries and raise cholesterol levels. Check your food labels, and substitute trans fats for healthy fats, like those found in fish, nuts, and avocados.

3. Have a heart-to-heart

Ask your doctor at your next physical about your cholesterol levels. The American Heart Association recommends that all adults 20 years or older have their cholesterol checked every four to six years.1

4. Catch some Zs

The saying, “you snooze you lose,” doesn’t apply to heart health. Getting enough sleep is important for the health of your cardiovascular system.

5. Be a quitter

Smoking is toxic for your heart and lungs. Ditch the cigarettes and avoid second-hand smoke whenever possible.
